Sometimes when you are used to eating or getting store-bought granola, you don't even think of making it yourself. Why take the time when you can buy it?
Here are a few reasons why you should start making granola at home:
- A big one for me is that you get to control de amount of sugar and oil that goes into your granola.
- And another big one is that it's a lot cheaper than store-bought granola.
I've been making granola for many years now.
Granola is becoming more popular in Paraguay, and you can find it in different stores. But that wasn't the case 10 years ago and that's why I started making it at home.
I've tried many recipes over the years and for a while, I thought that in order to have crunchy granola I needed a lot of honey and oil.
A few years ago I discovered that this wasn't true. I found an article that had a basic recipe of 2 cups of oats, 2 tablespoons of oil and 2 tablespoons of honey.
I made it and came out nice and crunchy, but not sweet enough for my taste. Later, I added 2 more tablespoons of honey and it was just how we like it, not too sweet but sweet enough.
Is Granola Healthy?
I'm not a nutritionist, what I know is that oats are high in fiber and iron, and nuts (if using them) and seeds add unsaturated fats and some protein.
Store-bought granolas tend to have lots of oil and sugar, making it not great if you are counting calories.
Adding milk or natural yogurt and fresh fruit will help you have a more balanced breakfast, and will add calcium, protein, vitamins, and minerals.
Ingredients for Homemade Granola
Like I mentioned before. This recipe has only 3 ingredients. Use it as a base to add other ingredients too.
Oats. The prefer oats for making granola are rolled oats, also known as old-fashioned oats. This type of oats keep their shape well while baking.
Sweetener. For this recipe I used honey, but maple syrup or rice syrup can be used instead.
Fat. I used vegetable oil. You can also use melted butter or coconut oil.
Other ingredients: Before baking, you can add nuts, shredded coconut, or wheat germ; cool completely and add some dried fruit.
Tips for Making your First Batch a Success
I've burned so many batches of granola throughout the years, and I know how painful it is to throw away food and your time.
- Mix your ingredients well. Get your hands in there and make sure all the oats are coated with the honey/oil mixture.
- Spread the granola evenly on a baking pan, but don't press it hard.
- Set a timer and stir every 10 minutes.
Granola keeps really well at room temperature, in an airtight container.
If where you live is humid and you are adding nuts to this granola, keep it at room temperature for only 2 weeks, otherwise, keep it in the fridge.
Serve granola with milk, or yogurt and fruit.
