Crispy puff pastry squares, slathered with whipped cream cheese and topped with smoked salmon. Simple, yet elegant and delicious.
These smoked salmon appetizers make a perfect light start to any dinner and are always a hit at parties.
Assembling them is much easier (and faster) than it looks.
This recipe is simple. You can throw it together in no time and you can make a few things in advance. The whipped cream cheese can be chilled overnight, and be ready to assemble right before your special dinner.
I've been enjoying using store-bought puff pastry. It makes for a pretty appetizer without all the work that involves making this buttery layered pastry.
Coming from a landlock country, smoked salmon is really a treat for my family. Not something we can have very often, so it makes our holiday even more special.
Ingredients
- puff pastry
- egg: for egg wash
- cream cheese: full fat
- garlic
- green onions
- black pepper
- whipping cream
- smoked salmon
How to make it
Pull the puff pastry out of the refrigerator at least 10 minutes before using.
Then cut the puff pastry into 12 squares. Using a fork, poke each square, and make 4 indentations with a knife (don't cut all the way through).
Brush them with egg wash and bake.
While the puff pastry is baking, cream together cream cheese, garlic, black pepper and whipping cream until light and fluffy. Fold in the green onions.
Once the puff pastry is cool, spread the cream cheese mixture, and add a slice of smoked salmon. Easy and delicious!
Tips for making smoked salmon appetizer
For whipped cream cheese mixture:
- bring the cream cheese to room temperature before creaming
- but keep the whipping cream cold
- beat only until light and creamy, don't overmix
- make it 2 to 3 days before using
For puff pastry:
- remove from the fridge 10 minutes before using
- use a ruler to make even squares
- poke puff pastry with a fork (it helps release steam)
- I don't suggest baking them the day before
